Dentures & Partials
Dentures and partial dentures are an option for patients who are missing all or many of their teeth. It is important to replace missing teeth quickly to avoid long term problems to the jaw and surrounding muscles. Missing teeth also make it difficult to eat and speak, and make the patient look older than they are.
Dentures are used to replace all of the upper or lower teeth. Partials are used to fill a gap or space in the row of teeth. Today’s dentures are not like traditional false teeth. Now, dentures and partials are more comfortable, secure and natural looking. Most people won’t even know you have dentures.
Implant Supported Dentures
When possible, Dr. Laura recommends implant supported dentures. These are prosthetic teeth permanently anchored to the jaw using dental implants. As few as two or four dental implants may be needed depending on the patient and in some cases, an existing denture can be incorporated into the treatment.
Though there is a considerable investment with implant supported dentures, the long term benefits far out weigh initial cost concerns. First, implant supported dentures will better preserve the patient’s bone. Second, dental implants secure the denture in place so there is no risk of slippage, particularly a concern for lower dentures.
