Sedation Dentistry
An estimate 30 to 40 million Americans avoid the dentist because of fear and anxiety. Dental phobia is an all too common condition that can prevent people from getting the dental care they need. Sedation dentistry is a technique that can be used when a patient suffers from dental anxiety or dental phobia.
Depending on the extent of the anxiety or phobia, varying degrees of dental sedation can be utilized, including conscious sedation with oral sedatives, inhalation nitrous oxide sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation. IV sedation is administered by an anesthesiologist.
Sedation dentistry is also an option for patients who have special needs. Dr. Laura Wittenauer has the experience and training to treat adults and children who have special needs ranging from uncooperativeness and anxiety to mental and physical disabilities. Once sedated, patients are relaxed and able to undergo dental procedures.
