TMJ Therapy

TMJ Disorders are a complex group of disorders characterized by chronic pain in the jaw, teeth and/or face. Sometimes TMJ related issues can cause headaches and migraines.

Dr. Laura has studied advanced restorative dentistry with an emphasis on understanding and diagnosing TMJ Disorders. Patients suffering from these conditions are unique from one another and there is no single method of treatment.

Signs and Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

  • Popping, clicking or locking of the jaw
  • Teeth grinding
  • Tooth wear
  • Frequent headaches or migraine headaches
  • Chronic earaches and/or noises in the ear
  • Pain in the face, neck or shoulders

After a careful review of the patient’s medical and dental history, Dr. Laura will perform a comprehensive examination where she inspects the entire masticatory system to look for signs of instability in the occlusion (bite). Sometimes, diagnosis is aided by Doppler equipment to listen to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Treatment for TMJ Disorders is specific to the individual. Depending on the complexity of the problem, one or several treatments may be attempted before an effective solution is reached. Dr. Laura may also involve other medical professionals as part of a “multidisciplinary approach”.
