Traditional teeth whitening involves the application of a whitening agent to the outer surface of the teeth. Internal teeth whitening, however, involves the whitening agent being placed inside the teeth. When you receive an internal whitening treatment, our dentist will make a small hole in the back of the tooth. Any debris and infected tissue will be removed, and the whitening agent will be placed into the tooth before it is sealed with a temporary filling material. This whitening agent will work to lighten the tooth until it reaches your desired shade of white. Placement of the whitening agent can be completed in about 30 minutes, but the whitening agent will remain in place for one to two weeks, after which our dentist will meet with you to evaluate the appearance of the tooth and, if needed, repeat the whitening process.
Please keep in mind that internal bleaching may not eliminate all staining from your teeth. Our dentist may recommend additional treatments to improve the appearance of your teeth as needed. We also recommend that you complete root canals or other endodontic treatments prior to receiving internal teeth bleaching. This will make your whitening treatment more comfortable and will allow you to eat and drink normally while the bleaching agent is in place.
